Microsoft SQL Server & Visual Studio 2005 Setup Stupidity

Another most stupidest thing in this world found in softwares is that when you install MS software in the wrong order will cause everything to sort of malfunction.

If you installed MS SQL Server 2005 *AFTER* MS Visual Studio 2005, you will encounter the following problem:

1. Unable to install if you choose to install SQL Reporting service. Apparently Visual Studio already installs that automatically... solution is to *NOT* to choose to install it during SQL Server 2005 setup.

2. You are not able to install custom toolbox in Visual Studio 2005...  you get a Tools.InstallCommunityControls command failure. Solution is to copy Microsoft.VisualStudio.ToolBoxControlInstallerUI.dll file from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\1033\ to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\ and run devenv /setup command.

tcpserver: fatal: temporarily unable to figure out IP address for 0.0.0.0: file does not exist

If you ever encounter this "tcpserver: fatal: temporarily unable to figure out IP address for 0.0.0.0: file does not exist" error on CentOS 64bit systems, use the following solution:

touch /etc/dnsrewrite

DO NOT BUY WARCRAFT 3 OR FROZEN THRONE IN CHINA!!!

This is one of my worst shopping experiences. In fact, all of my bad shopping experiences are all in China.

Today I bought Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne from the biggest bookstore in Guangzhou, and after I installed the game, I could not get on Battle.Net with the CDKEYS it provided. It says that the key was used by someone else!

Then on its user manual, it says that if you want to play online, you have to "exchange cdkey" on Aomei's website (http://www.aomeisoft.com/cdkey.asp). What the heck is that? I used to own Warcraft 3 before, and there is never something like this!!

Do they want a Tech Superman or make bad softwares?

It amazes me how many requirements Chinese companies seek in an IT person... for java you have to know struts, jsp, servlets, hibernate, jsf, oracle, sql server, db2, sybase, etc.

Besides, you have to know UML, database tuning, database design, etc.

It is no wonder why these Chinese software companies make bad softwares. Even if they hire a man who claims that he knows and can do all those, he's no expert in everything. Why? Just becoming a professional Oracle DBA or SQL Server DBA alone takes many years, let alone all those java frameworks they expect you to know and have experience in each of them. This is plain stupid.

The Burden of Life is Heavy

Just like my Master Mahasi Sayadaw and the Buddha taught, the burden of life is very heavy.

Like the reality in China and Taiwan. The average salary in China is around 2k~3k / month, and 1 square meter of apartment price averagely around 4k~6k or more depending on which city.

A person has to work so long... more than 10 years in order to get a place to live, and what's worse is that prices of everything is rising in China.

The situation in Taiwan is even worse, a person has to work for 2 months or more just to get 1 square meter of an average apartment.

This is the result of capitalism?

China and Java Blindness

If you ever looked for IT jobs in China, you'll notice that most companies are looking for Java developers and nothing else. Very few are for ASP .NET. I wonder why companies choose Java mostly in China. It's dumb.

Java in its essence:

1. Lengthens development time

2. Hard to debug

3. Increases costs

4. Can over-complicating simple things

And yet most companies still choose it in China and make horrible softwares. Isn't it blindness?

PuTTY Command Line for Instant SSH Proxy Tunneling

putty -ssh <username>@<proxy ip> -v -L 127.0.0.1:8080:<proxy ip>:80 -P <ssh port> -pw <password>

Then just connect using proxy server 127.0.0.1:8080 in your program's settings.

Loved Yahoo User Interface (YUI)

Have you tried to use YUI? If not, you should... it's simple and platform agnostic (is that how you call it?).

It made my AJAX projects much easier and simpler, I can't wait for its new features to come up and developed into a full version!
