Increase SQL Server max pool size

Another lesson learned: Increase the Max Pool Size setting on systems that does a lot of requests to the DB if you use ADO.NET

I had problems earlier this week with a custom session management system that handles 15.000.000-20.000.000 requests per day per machine but is designed to handle a lot more.  The DB is pretty well optimized so call times for each query is only a few milliseconds in normal conditions. With 17.500.000 requests per day there are ~200 requests per second to the session management system with peaks that are a lot higher due to traffic distribution throughout the day.

Protecting FMS Apps from Free Loaders

From Peldi:

Peldi wrote on July 25, 2003: If someone finds out the name of your flashcom server and of one of your app, they can host your swf on their web servers and claim your app as their own; believe it or not, it happened to my PPhone app. :(

There are two ways to protect your apps from this hack:

1.If you have access to your VHost.xml file, use the "Allow" tag to specify your web server's domain, as described in the Managing_Flashcom PDF on macromedia.com: The <Allow> tag lets you specify domain names from which client applications should be allowed to connect to this virtual host. The default value is all, which allows connections from any domain. If no value is specified, only connections from the domain that is being connected to are allowed. If you list specific domains in this tag, only connections from those domains are allowed. Separate each domain name in the list with a comma.

Remove CRE Loaded Standard Google Ad

If you want to remove the Google Ads that CRE Loaded adds to the footer, and ahem.. hides them so well..  edit this file:

/includes/javascript/cart_links.js.php

Comment out or delete the last four lines before the end php tag (?>).   I won’t write out the entire code, as my blogging software (WordPress) is a little funky with the code I wanted to paste.

Comment out the lines (pseudo-code):

//echo 'table...'
//echo 'td...'
//echo include('http://creloaded.com/cre_google.js');
//echo '/td

You’ll see the include statement getting the Google Ads from creloaded.com.

Clear Saved Windows Network Passwords

From time to time, I need to clear or reset a saved password to a network share.  When I connect to a remote computer and click the Remember Password checkbox, it gets stored somewhere... this command will help you manage those passwords:

rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr

ASP.NET 2.0 TreeView without Postback? Solved!

Friday, May 19, 2006

I've been scratching my head at the ASP.NET 2.0 TreeView control.  This control is meant to show a tree of items and each item can have a link to it.  For example, this is what I use for my menu on the left of the page.

Trap F1 Key or any Keys in both Firefox and IE

There are various ways to trap keys in Firefox and IE. Apparently Firefox and IE have different ways of trapping the F1 key and prevent the default application help.

After quite a bit of research, I came up with the following code that will work both in Firefox and IE. The following example uses Yahoo's event library, however, you can code in original DOM easily:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=gb2312" />
<title>Untitled Document</title>
<script type="text/javascript" src="build/yahoo/yahoo.js" ></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="build/event/event.js" ></script>

<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">

//var oElement = document.getElementById("body1");

if (!YAHOO.util.Event.addListener(document, "keydown", fnCallback)) alert("failed");
document.onhelp = new Function("return false;"); // disable default help in IE

function fnCallback(evt) {
   if ( evt == null )
       evt = event;

   if ( evt.keyCode == 112 ) //F1
   {
       alert("la"); // put your action here! IMPORTANT: must come before evt.preventDefault()!
       evt.preventDefault();  // disable default help in Firefox
       return false;
   }
}

</script>

</head>

<body id="body1">
</body>
</html>

ASP.NET Compiler bug - Circular Reference

The solution is simply (although not obviously) to add the batch="false" attribute to the compilation element in the web.config file:
<configuration ...>
    <system.web>
        <compilationbatch="false"/>
            …

This generates a lot fewer assemblies and avoids the problem.

Update: According to Mike Harder (a Software Design Engineer on the ASP.NET team) in his recent post on the ASP.Net forums, this is a known bug in the ASP.Net compiler involving directory level circular references. An alternative fix to the batch="false" option is to reorganise the files in the web application to avoid a circular reference.
